Developing countries left ‘disappointed’ at climate talks
June 17, 2022“We are disappointed by the lack of substantive progress,” said the representative of Antigua and Barbados speaking on behalf of the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS).
He said countries were still waiting for assurances that “the finance we need now will be delivered at speed, or any time by 2025”.

June 17, 2022“Fundamentally, the war and cost of living must not be used as an excuse to let the 1.5C goal slip out of reach,” said Ambassador Conrod Hunte, from Antigua and Barbuda, who’s the lead negotiator for the Alliance of Small Island States in the Bonn talks.
“And adequate, fair climate finance is intrinsic to keeping us on this pathway.”

As Chair, I can say that our membership was forced to make compromises to ensure that the world received a climate pact that keeps us on the essential pathway of 1.5°C. It seems we small islands are always called on to compromise, to pay a high price for a crisis not of our making.

December 20, 2021“(We) did witness a clear shift from other countries to support keeping 1.5C alive,” said U.N. ambassador Aubrey Webson of Antigua and Barbuda, who chairs the Alliance of Small Island States, uniting 39 nations from the Pacific to the Caribbean.
Webson said the new high-level momentum behind 1.5C – as seen among leaders this year, from the G7 and G20 summits to the COP26 U.N. climate talks – must be matched by rapid action.
